Each year, tens of thousands of serious injuries and emergency room visits result from using lawn mowers, edgers and other lawn care equipment. It's not hard to see why: handling or pushing heavy machines with sharp cutting edges whirring at high speeds is inherently hazardous. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC), blades of rotary-type power lawn mowers revolve at speeds between 1800 and 3000 revolutions per minute. This means the cutting edge of a 20-inch blade is traveling at speeds between 100 and 190 miles per hour.
In fact, a recent USCPSC survey revealed that approximately two thirds of lawn mower injuries were caused by direct contact with mowers. The survey also revealed about 33% of the direct contact injuries were to toes and feet.
